Worlds archive FAQ
- What is the difference between prepared and impromptu WSDC motions?
- At Worlds, roughly half the rounds use prepared motions released weeks in advance, and the rest are impromptu: teams get the motion one hour before the debate and prepare without coaches or the internet. Both kinds are labeled in this archive, so you can drill each skill separately.
- Why do the oldest championships have missing rounds?
- The official archive is complete for most championships from 1999 onward, but several rounds from the 1994 to 1998 and 2000 championships were never recorded publicly. We list what the record preserves and do not reconstruct missing motions.
- How should I study past Worlds motions?
- Look for patterns, not predictions. Championship motions balance topic areas across the tournament, favor deep comparative questions over news reactions, and phrase burdens precisely. Prepping ten past Grand Final motions teaches you what the top of the format expects from a case.
Championships before 1994 are not represented: no public archive preserves those motions. If you competed then and kept records, we would genuinely love to hear from you.
How to actually use this archive
A list of 374 motions is a training resource only if you know what to do with it. These are the guides our own coaches point students at.
- The four motion types
Policy, value, actor, and regret. Sorting a Worlds motion into the right type tells you what you have to prove before you write a single argument.
- The 1-hour prep planner
Half of every Worlds round is impromptu. This is the minute-by-minute routine for the prep hour those motions get.
- Building a case file
Prepared motions are released in advance and printed material is legal in the prep room. This is what to bring.
- The full motion bank
Worlds is 374 of 12,400+. Filter the rest by topic, type, and year, or draw a random one for a scrimmage.
- How to make the USA Debate team
For students aiming at the championship these motions come from: eligibility, the application, and the timeline.
Train on the motions Worlds actually set.
Our competition students debate championship motions in full judged rounds, with oral adjudication and written feedback after every one.
