The Bristol Juniors Debating Championships is a two-day online tournament in the Junior World Schools format for students aged 7 to 14, run by EduDrift on Zoom and Slack.

The Bristol Juniors Debating Championships is a two-day online tournament in the Junior World Schools format for students aged 7 to 14, run by EduDrift on Zoom and Slack. Five preliminary rounds on the Saturday, including a prepared round and a silent-prep round, then four elimination rounds on the Sunday. Participation and achievement certificates carry the Bristol emblem, and every student gets a commendation letter and written feedback from the international judging panel.

Rounds run on Singapore time from 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM each day, which is 4:00 AM to 2:30 PM in Dubai, so it suits our Asia and Gulf students best. Motions are released per round, so most of the debating is impromptu; our four prep hours focus on building a clear case quickly and answering the other side. Which students is this for?

Ages 7 to 14, in teams of three. A student who has finished a foundation course, or one term of classes, is ready. Older students should look at the Bristol Schools Debating Championships the weekend before, which is the senior edition.

Is a judge required from us?

No. EduDrift provides the judges, which is why this tournament is priced below the ones where we must send a judge. Our coach briefs the team before each day and is reachable throughout.

Preparing for the tournament

Students entering their first judged rounds usually get the most out of a short run of coached practice first. The Foundation class covers the format from scratch, the Competition Team trains year-round, and the motion bank has thousands of real motions to practise on.
